I
have had some difficulty getting information on the history of this
fine Police Department. What I have found instead is many of the old
penal codes for the village. While one could easily admit the needs
of the residents as well as the value of a dollar has changed over the
years, these old laws that were once on the books still give a chuckle
in the light of today.
|
- You
can’t leave your horse untied under a penalty of $5 for each
offence.
But if you tie or hitch a horse, or other animal, to any shade or
ornamental tree in a public place, you shall forfeit a “sum
not less than $2.00 nor more than $5.00.”
You will also be deemed a disorderly person if you “engage in
any amusement or practice having a tendency to frighten horses.”
|
- You
will be charged $5.00 if you ride your horse faster than 15 miles
per hour on any village street and that doubles to $10 on Sunday.
This speed limit also applies to bicycles, tricycles, automobiles
and other self propelled vehicles.
|
- It
will cost you $10 if you leave a casket on the street (or sidewalk).
|
- Acts
of prostitution will be considered “disorderly conduct”.
So will throwing snowballs.
|
- It
will cost you between $2-$4 if you are caught bathing in any waters
“in a state of nudity between sunrise and 8:30 in the evening”.
I guess that means it’s okay the rest of the time.
|
- There
will be a fine up to $25 for cursing in public.
|
- Pig
Hill better be careful…It is unlawful to keep a swine on any
premises within the village.
|
- “It
shall be the duty of the police officers of the village to take into
custody any bitch found running at large on any street...between the
first of June and the 15th of September”. Did I mention this
ordinance is referring to a dog.
